Prayagraj, UP – The Allahabad High Court Bar Association launched an indefinite strike on Tuesday, protesting the transfer of Delhi High Court Justice Yashwant Varma back to Allahabad. The protest, led by Bar Association President Anil Tiwari, targets not the judge himself, but what lawyers describe as a lack of transparency and alleged corruption within the judicial system.
The Supreme Court collegium confirmed its recommendation to transfer Justice Varma following an investigation into a large cash sum allegedly discovered at his Delhi residence after a fire on March 14th. While Justice Varma vehemently denies any wrongdoing, claiming the allegations are a conspiracy, the Delhi High Court subsequently withdrew his judicial work.
Mr. Tiwari stated the strike is a fight against those involved in corruption and a system lacking transparency. He asserted the association is prepared for a prolonged battle and will not resume work until the transfer order is reconsidered and withdrawn. The lawyers’ action follows the Supreme Court’s public release of its resolution recommending the transfer. Justice Varma, who was appointed to the Delhi High Court in 2021 after serving in Allahabad, maintains his innocence.
