**Kozhikode, Kerala, March 24, 2025** – Despite increased enforcement using AI-powered traffic cameras, Kozhikode district is grappling with a massive ₹40 crore backlog in unpaid traffic fines. Since the cameras’ June 2023 launch, a significant number of motorists have failed to pay penalties for violations, primarily involving mobile phone use while driving, lack of helmets, triple riding, and seatbelt non-compliance.
The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) deployed 55 AI cameras across the district (out of a total of 60, with some currently non-functional). The department operates a control room with a 15-member team to manage the AI-based enforcement. While the MVD sends timely reminders to violators, many remain unpaid. The department is investigating cases of potential evasion tactics and warns that violators may face stringent court action and increased penalties as per Central government regulations.
Last month alone, over 33,000 traffic violations were detected, with nearly 20,000 involving helmetless riding. The MVD is exploring strategies to improve collection rates, emphasizing the significance of timely payment to avoid legal repercussions.
