Sun Mar 23 15:02:24 UTC 2025: ## Tiruvarur-Karaikudi Rail Line Electrification Nears Completion

**Tiruchi, March 23, 2025** – A significant step towards modernizing rail infrastructure in Tamil Nadu has been achieved with the energization of the 60-km Tiruvarur-Thiruthuraipoondi-Agasthiyampalli broad gauge railway line. The electrification project, undertaken by the Southern Railway Construction Organisation, was recently approved by the Electrical Inspector to the Government of India.

The project involved overhead electrification across a 37-km stretch from Thiruthuraipoondi to Agasthiyampalli, passing through several stations including Kariyapattinam and Vedaranyam. A successful test run of an electric locomotive along the entire route was conducted on Saturday. A new traction substation has been established in Thiruthuraipoondi to support the electrified line.

The Thiruthuraipoondi-Agasthiyampalli section, upgraded to broad gauge and reopened in April 2023, is now fully electrified. Work continues on the remaining 150-km section from Thiruthuraipoondi to Karaikudi, expected to be completed by March 2026. Once finished, this will be the last broad gauge stretch in the Tiruchi Railway Division to be electrified. This major upgrade promises faster and more efficient rail travel in the region.
