**Trento, Italy** – Facing a severe demographic decline, the northern Italian province of Trentino is offering a substantial incentive to attract new residents to its picturesque Alpine villages: a €100,000 grant. The initiative aims to revitalize 33 towns facing depopulation.
The grant, totaling €80,000 for property renovations and €20,000 towards purchase, is available to Italian citizens, both domestically and abroad. However, recipients must commit to residing in the area or renting out the property for at least 10 years; failure to comply will necessitate repayment of the grant.
President Maurizio Fugatti stated that the project aims to boost local communities and promote territorial cohesion. This program follows a similar initiative in the town of Penne, Abruzzo, where abandoned homes are being sold for as little as €1.
Italy’s demographic challenge is significant. Scope Ratings predicts a nearly 19% reduction in the working-age population by 2040, exceeding declines in other European nations. This aging population, coupled with a low birth rate, is straining public finances due to increased spending on pensions and healthcare. The Trentino initiative represents a bold attempt to address this pressing issue. Final approval for the program is expected in the coming weeks.
