Sun Mar 23 19:57:22 UTC 2025: **Texas Longhorns Fire Basketball Coach Rodney Terry After Disappointing Season**

**Austin, TX (March 24, 2025)** – The University of Texas announced the firing of men’s basketball head coach Rodney Terry on Sunday, ending his two-year tenure. The decision comes after a disappointing first season in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and an early exit from the NCAA Tournament.

Terry, who took over the program mid-season in 2023 after the dismissal of Chris Beard, initially led the Longhorns to remarkable success, culminating in a Big 12 Conference Tournament victory and an Elite Eight appearance. He was subsequently rewarded with a five-year, $15 million contract.

However, the team struggled to replicate that success in the following two seasons. Despite the presence of SEC Freshman of the Year Tre Johnson, Texas finished the 2024-2025 season with a 19-16 overall record and a second-round NCAA Tournament exit. The team’s struggles included a 6-12 conference record and a seven-game losing streak. Recruitment challenges, exacerbated by the transfer portal and NIL deals, also contributed to the team’s underperformance. Top recruits chose professional opportunities over playing for Texas.

Athletic director Chris Del Conte stated that the decision was made after a thorough review of the program’s performance over the past three seasons, considering their first year in the SEC and future prospects. Terry’s contract still had three years remaining.
