Mon Mar 24 17:20:00 UTC 2025: **House Republican Demands IRS Revoke Tax-Exempt Status of Stacey Abrams-Linked Group**
WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (R-Mo.) is calling on the IRS to revoke the tax-exempt status of the New Georgia Project, a non-profit organization founded by former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams. This follows a $300,000 fine levied against the organization by the Georgia Ethics Commission for violating state election laws, the largest penalty in the commission’s history.
The Georgia Ethics Commission found that the New Georgia Project failed to disclose over $4 million in campaign contributions and over $3 million in expenditures during Abrams’ 2018 gubernatorial campaign. Chairman Smith argues that this involvement constitutes a clear violation of the organization’s 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, which prohibits participation in political campaigns. While acknowledging that 501(c)(3) organizations can engage in nonpartisan voter education, Smith contends the New Georgia Project’s actions crossed this line.
Smith’s letter to IRS Commissioner Melanie Krause emphasizes that the organization’s intervention in the 2018 election cycle on behalf of Abrams and other candidates warrants the revocation of its tax-exempt status and reclassification as an “action organization.” The New Georgia Project maintains that they accept the ruling and are moving forward. The IRS and the New Georgia Project have yet to comment on the request.
