**Tirunelveli, March 24, 2025** – Traders of the newly constructed Netaji Bose Daily Market in Tirunelveli Town protested on Monday, urging Collector R. Sukumar to expedite the market’s opening. The ₹10.97 crore market, built under the Smart City Mission, remains non-operational due to a lack of essential facilities, according to the traders.

The petition highlighted the cancellation of shop allocations for 25 traders who missed the deposit deadline, resulting in the forfeiture of 20% of their auction deposit. Traders also requested a ban on vegetable sales within a 1 km radius of the new market to ensure its success.

In other news from Tirunelveli, several petitions were submitted to the Collector. The Thamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) requested desilting of a well in Kakkan Nagar to provide water for a local sanitary complex. TVK’s women’s wing sought improved drinking water supply to Beedi Colony. Additionally, self-help group women from Karuppukatti village appealed for restored water supply after a 28-day drought.

Collector Sukumar also distributed financial assistance totaling ₹19.09 lakh to nine differently-abled individuals, providing retrofitted scooters and funding for garment manufacturing units. A further ₹1 lakh was given to the family of a man who drowned in the Tamirabharani River.
