Mon Mar 24 12:42:21 UTC 2025: **New Schemes Urged to Bridge Karnataka’s Development Gap**
**Mysuru, March 24, 2025** – Economist and chairman of the Regional Imbalance Redressal Committee, M. Govinda Rao, has called for the implementation of new schemes in Karnataka’s underdeveloped taluks to boost per capita income and address regional disparities. Speaking at a divisional-level committee meeting in Mysuru, Prof. Rao highlighted the insufficient impact of previous initiatives despite a ₹31,000 crore investment based on the D.M. Nanjundappa Committee report. He emphasized that simply spending money is not enough; the focus should be on improving per capita income, particularly in North Karnataka where it lags behind the South. Industrialization and job creation in backward areas were identified as key priorities.
MLA Anil Kumar C. highlighted the backwardness of H.D. Kote and Sargur taluks, citing inadequate public transportation, teacher shortages, and poor road infrastructure, particularly affecting tribal communities. Committee member Suryanarayana pointed to the disparity within seemingly developed districts, with even areas like Brahmavar taluk in Udupi lacking essential educational resources. The committee’s director noted that while the Mysuru region has progressed since the 1956 unification of Karnataka, the Hyderabad region has not seen commensurate development. The Nanjundappa Committee, formed in 2020, identified 113 out of 175 taluks as backward and recommended a 60/40 fund allocation towards North and South Karnataka respectively to remedy this imbalance. The Regional Imbalance Redressal Committee is undertaking further research to assess the effectiveness of past measures.
