**CHENNAI, March 24, 2025** – A community initiative launched during the pandemic continues to provide much-needed clothing to impoverished residents of Ekkatuthangal, Chennai. Located on Jawaharlal Nehru 100 Feet Road, a shelf stocked with donated clothing sits outside Ray Mart, a local supermarket and textile showroom.
The shelf, established in 2021 by Rays Group of Companies founder L. Rathnaraj, allows individuals to donate unwanted clothing and provides free garments to those in need. The initiative, initially requiring some oversight, now operates on a self-regulatory basis, with both donors and recipients aware of its location. Ray Mart also contributes damaged or unsold clothing from its showroom to the shelf.
A recent photograph captured a mother, Satya, searching for clothing for her child, Rajan, who also found a soft toy among the donations. The initiative highlights the ongoing need for such community support even after the pandemic’s immediate crisis has subsided. The “Community Shelf,” as it’s known, serves as a testament to the ongoing generosity of the community and the persistent struggle faced by some to access basic necessities.
