**London, March 24, 2025** – Ásthildur Lóa Thórsdóttir, Iceland’s Children’s Minister, resigned on Sunday following revelations of a relationship she had with a 15-year-old boy over 35 years ago. The relationship, which resulted in a child, came to light last week through reports by national broadcaster RUV.

While Iceland’s age of consent is 15, it is illegal for adults in positions of authority, such as teachers or mentors, to engage in sexual relationships with minors. Ms. Thórsdóttir, who was 23 at the time, stated that she was not a leader of the church youth group where they met, and that such relationships, while undesirable, were not uncommon at the time. She confirmed the relationship lasted only a few weeks but that the father was present at the child’s birth and paid child support for 18 years.

Despite her resignation from the government, Ms. Thórsdóttir will remain a lawmaker for the People’s Party. Iceland’s President, Halla Tómasdóttir, accepted her resignation on Sunday.
