Mon Mar 24 10:43:14 UTC 2025: ## Mumbai Comedy Venue Shuts Down After Vandalism by Shiv Sena Workers

**MUMBAI, INDIA** – Habitat studio, a popular Mumbai performing arts venue, has temporarily closed its doors following vandalism by Shiv Sena workers protesting comedian Kunal Kamra’s recent video criticizing Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

The attack, which saw Sena workers damaging equipment and property, sparked outrage from artists and the studio itself. Comedian Abijit Ganguly took to X to condemn the incident, calling it an act of senseless violence. He stressed that Habitat studio is a shared venue used by numerous artists and that blaming the studio for Kamra’s actions is illogical, comparing it to vandalizing a residential building because a resident expressed a controversial opinion.

Habitat studio management released a statement expressing shock and worry over the incident. They clarified that they are not responsible for the views of the artists who perform there and that they are shutting down temporarily to reassess their safety and security measures. They reiterated their commitment to providing a platform for free expression while ensuring the safety of their property.

The vandalism stems from Kamra’s recent parody video targeting Shinde, which utilized the song “Bholi Si Surat” and included the term “gaddar” (traitor). Multiple FIRs have been filed against Kamra following the video’s release. This is not the first controversy surrounding the studio; last month, it faced criticism over a roast show featuring YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia.

The temporary closure of Habitat studio raises concerns about the freedom of expression for artists in India and the potential for political backlash against venues hosting potentially controversial performances. The incident highlights the ongoing tension between political expression and the safety of performance spaces.
