Mon Mar 24 03:40:00 UTC 2025: **White Sox Infielder Drury Out to Start Season with Thumb Fracture; Thorpe to Undergo Season-Ending Tommy John Surgery**
GLENDALE, Ariz. – The Chicago White Sox suffered a double blow on Saturday, announcing that infielder Brandon Drury will miss the start of the season due to a fractured left thumb, and that pitcher Drew Thorpe will require season-ending Tommy John surgery.
Drury, 32, impressed during spring training, hitting .410 with three home runs and 11 RBIs. His strong performance had positioned him for a spot on the opening day roster before the injury was discovered. He will undergo a follow-up appointment on Monday. The versatile Drury can play second base, third base, and the outfield. He signed a minor league contract with the White Sox on February 7th.
Meanwhile, 24-year-old pitcher Drew Thorpe will undergo Tommy John surgery performed by Dr. Keith Meister. Thorpe, who debuted in the majors last season posting a 3-3 record and a 5.48 ERA in nine starts, had previous surgery in September to address a bone spur in his right elbow. He was one of four players acquired by the White Sox in the March 13, 2024 trade that sent ace Dylan Cease to the San Diego Padres.
The White Sox open their season Thursday against the Los Angeles Angels. The team will now need to adjust their lineup and pitching rotation to account for the absences of Drury and Thorpe.
