**Mumbai, March 24, 2025** – A large crocodile was spotted roaming near Powai Lake on the IIT Bombay campus Sunday night, causing a stir among students and staff. The reptile, believed to have emerged from the lake, was seen resting on a nearby road before returning to the water.
According to Pawan Sharma, founder president of RAWW (Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare) and honorary wildlife warden, the crocodile’s appearance on land is unusual. He speculated that it might be a female searching for a nesting site. Local residents and officials ensured the crocodile’s safety, and it retreated to the lake on its own.
The Mumbai Range of Thane Territorial Wing is monitoring the situation and urging residents to remain vigilant and avoid areas where crocodiles might be present, while emphasizing there is no need for panic. The incident highlights the occasional proximity of wildlife to urban areas.
