LUCKNOW, INDIA – The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has granted the Indian Home Ministry four weeks to decide on a petition questioning Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship. The petitioner, a BJP worker named Shishir, alleges Mr. Gandhi holds dual citizenship, citing purported confidential emails and claiming the UK government’s records list Mr. Gandhi as a UK citizen. This claim, which has been circulating for several years, is based on the assertion that dual citizenship is illegal in India, and that acquiring another nation’s citizenship automatically revokes Indian citizenship.
The court’s decision follows a previous hearing in November where the ministry was given three weeks to respond. A similar petition filed by former BJP MP Subramanian Swamy in the Delhi High Court is also underway, with the court questioning the central government’s inaction on the matter. Mr. Swamy’s petition cites records from a now-dissolved British company that allegedly listed Mr. Gandhi as a UK national.
The Congress party vehemently denies the allegations, with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra stating that Mr. Gandhi is unequivocally Indian. Mr. Gandhi himself has dismissed the claims as an attempt to damage his reputation. The Allahabad High Court’s four-week deadline is expected to bring a resolution to this long-standing controversy.
