Mon Mar 24 06:55:50 UTC 2025: ## Comedian’s Joke on Deputy CM Sparks Violence, Political Fury in Mumbai

**Mumbai, March 24, 2025** – A stand-up comedy routine targeting Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has devolved into a major political controversy, marked by violence and escalating threats. Comedian Kunal Kamra’s performance at the Unicontinental Mumbai hotel in Khar included a parody song mocking Shinde’s 2022 rebellion against then-Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

Following the performance and the subsequent online posting of a video clip, a group of Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) workers stormed the hotel, vandalizing the premises and issuing threats against Kamra. Videos circulating on social media show party workers, identifiable by their white clothing and orange scarves, throwing chairs and causing significant damage.

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam publicly threatened Kamra with physical violence, while other party officials, including Lok Sabha MP Naresh Mhaske, accused Kamra of being paid by Thackeray to attack Shinde. Mhaske went on to warn that Shiv Sainiks would ensure Kamra’s inability to move freely throughout the country, and potentially force him to leave the country altogether. Krishna Hegde, a Shiv Sena spokesperson, added that Kamra would receive “Shiv Sena treatment.”

While some within the Shinde faction defended the actions as a response to disrespectful comments, others attempted to frame Kamra’s actions as part of a larger political strategy. Shiv Sena leader Milind Deora, while criticizing Kamra’s remarks, suggested the incident was a ploy to distract from the legal issues facing the Uddhav Thackeray faction of the party.

An FIR has been filed against Kamra under sections 353(1)(b) and 356(2) for statements conducing to public mischief and defamation, respectively. Conversely, a separate FIR has been filed against 19 Shiv Sena workers involved in the hotel vandalism. A letter was also submitted to the Mumbai Police seeking action against Kamra, and also against Aaditya Thackeray, Rahul Gandhi, and Sanjay Raut for alleged conspiracy. A protest by the Yuva Sena, the youth wing of the Shiv Sena, included the burning of Kamra’s photographs.

Opposition leaders have condemned the violence and voiced support for Kamra. Aaditya Thackeray, a leader from the Uddhav Thackeray faction, questioned the state’s law and order situation, while Priyanka Chaturvedi offered words of encouragement to the comedian. The incident has ignited a heated debate about freedom of speech and the limits of political satire in India.
