**Guwahati, Assam – March 24, 2025** – The Assam Congress party is demanding disciplinary action against ruling BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi for allegedly physically assaulting and verbally abusing opposition legislators within the state assembly. Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia has written to Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, urging him to initiate a breach of privilege proceeding against Mr. Kurmi.
The incident occurred on Friday, March 21st, during a heated assembly debate. Mr. Kurmi reportedly hurled expletives at opposition MLAs, even attempting to physically attack them before being restrained by marshals. The offensive language was subsequently expunged from the official record.
Mr. Saikia’s letter calls for Mr. Kurmi to be barred from attending the assembly until a committee investigating the breach of privilege concludes its work. He contends that Mr. Kurmi’s actions are unprecedented in the history of the Assam assembly and have created a climate of fear among opposition members.
While the Congress refrained from disrupting assembly proceedings after a brief walkout, Mr. Saikia emphasized the need for swift action to uphold the sanctity of the legislative body. He stated that Mr. Kurmi’s behavior has been widely condemned and that the repeated threats from the MLA are unacceptable.
The BJP state president, Dilip Saikia, has already called on Mr. Kurmi to issue a public apology. The Congress is demanding a response from the Speaker before the assembly reconvenes Monday morning at 9:30 am.
