**Guwahati, March 24, 2025** – The Assam Legislative Assembly was adjourned today following a heated confrontation between ruling BJP and opposition Congress MLAs. The chaos erupted after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma alleged that Deputy Speaker Numal Momin was attacked by Congress MLA Nurul Huda outside the Assembly building.
The incident followed a day of protests by Congress MLAs, who wore black clothes to condemn BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi’s alleged verbal and physical abuse of opposition members last week. Congress staged a sit-in demanding action against Kurmi before the session began.
CM Sarma, citing a WhatsApp message from Momin, claimed the Deputy Speaker was hospitalized following the alleged attack. He called for a police investigation. However, Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia countered, requesting a House Committee investigation instead, suggesting the incident occurred within the Assembly complex.
The conflicting accounts led to a shouting match between the ruling and opposition benches, with both sides accusing the other of instigating violence. The Chief Minister described the alleged attack on Momin, a tribal leader, as setting a “bad precedent.”
Speaker Biswajit Daimary, after ordering an inquiry into Momin’s condition, adjourned the House for 10 minutes to allow tensions to subside. The situation remains tense, with the future of the Assembly session uncertain.
