VANCOUVER, BC – The Vancouver Whitecaps FC and the Chicago Fire FC battled to a 1-1 draw at the half in a fiercely contested match. The game saw numerous fouls, several near misses, and a flurry of activity on both sides of the pitch.
Hugo Cuypers put the Fire ahead early with a close-range goal assisted by Philip Zinckernagel. However, the Whitecaps fought back, equalizing through Daniel Ríos who scored with a left-footed shot from outside the box, assisted by Jayden Nelson.
The first half was punctuated by several stoppages due to injuries to Chicago’s Hugo Cuypers and Chris Brady, as well as numerous fouls resulting in free kicks for both teams. Both teams had numerous scoring opportunities, with shots saved by goalkeepers and blocked by defenders on both sides. The half ended with a flurry of corners for Chicago and several near misses for both teams. The referee added three minutes of stoppage time before the whistle blew for halftime.
