**New Delhi, March 23, 2025** – India observed Shaheed Diwas (Martyrs’ Day) today, commemorating the hanging of three revolutionary freedom fighters – Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru – on this day in 1931. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the tributes, remembering their “supreme sacrifice” and highlighting their enduring inspiration. He posted on X (formerly Twitter), praising their “fearless pursuit of freedom and justice.”
The three young men, all in their twenties, were executed in Lahore’s Central Jail by British colonial authorities following their involvement in the assassination of British police officer John Saunders. While their intended target was Superintendent of Police James A. Scott, who ordered a brutal lathi charge that killed prominent freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai in 1928, a case of mistaken identity led to Saunders’ death.
Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru were members of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA), a group deeply influenced by socialist ideals. Their execution sparked widespread protests and cemented their status as martyrs in the fight for India’s independence. Their actions, motivated by a desire for justice and freedom from British rule, continue to resonate with Indians today. Shaheed Diwas serves as a powerful reminder of their courage and sacrifice in the struggle for national liberation.
