NEW DELHI – The Supreme Court of India has released documents related to allegations of a large cash sum found at the residence of Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma following a fire incident. The documents, including a report from the Delhi High Court Chief Justice and Justice Varma’s response, are available on the Supreme Court website.

The decision to make the documents public was made by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna in consultation with other collegium members to ensure transparency and counter misinformation surrounding the case. The amount of cash allegedly found remains undisclosed.

Following the allegations, Chief Justice Khanna established a three-member committee comprising Chief Justices Sheel Nagu (Punjab and Haryana High Court), GS Sandhawalia (Himachal Pradesh High Court), and Justice Anu Sivaraman (Karnataka High Court) to investigate the matter. In the interim, Justice Varma has been temporarily relieved of judicial duties. The Supreme Court clarified that his potential transfer to the Allahabad High Court is unrelated to this inquiry.

Senior lawyer Harish Salve, a critic of the collegium system, raised concerns about the handling of the case, citing conflicting reports regarding the cash recovery. The Delhi fire chief reportedly stated no cash was recovered.

Justice Varma, who has been a judge of the Delhi High Court since 2021, previously served on the Allahabad High Court. He currently heads a division bench dealing with tax and company appeals.
