**Kollam, Kerala –** A tragic incident unfolded in Elamadu, Kollam, where a 35-year-old man, Ranjith, died by suicide after allegedly attempting to kill his ailing 58-year-old mother, Sujatha. The incident, which police believe stemmed from financial hardship and Sujatha’s deteriorating health, involved the pair allegedly consuming a large quantity of pills on Friday. Ranjith then reportedly attempted to strangle his mother with a shawl, believing he had succeeded. He subsequently hanged himself.

However, Sujatha survived the attack. She was discovered in critical condition the following morning by Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) officials who were visiting to address an outstanding electricity bill. Hearing her cries for help, the officials alerted local residents, who in turn contacted the police. Sujatha is currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.

Police reports indicate that Ranjith and Sujatha had no other known relatives. The incident highlights the devastating consequences of financial distress and the importance of mental health support.
