Sun Mar 23 01:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Delhi High Court Judge’s Home Fire Sparks Cash Allegations, Leading to Supreme Court Inquiry
**NEW DELHI** – A fire at the residence of Delhi High Court Judge Justice Yashwant Varma has ignited a controversy after allegations surfaced regarding bundles of cash found at the scene. Delhi High Court Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyay submitted a 25-page report to Supreme Court Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna on Saturday detailing the incident and subsequent investigation.
The report, unexpectedly uploaded to the Supreme Court website Saturday night, includes statements from Justice Varma, details provided by the Delhi Police Commissioner, photographs, and videos. It also documents the fire department’s operations and includes a letter from the Chief Justice of India.
While the report mentions the discovery of partially burnt bundles of cash, Justice Varma has denied any wrongdoing, stating that neither he nor his family members kept any such amount of money in the storeroom. The report notes the existence of official information regarding the cash but also indicates the need for further investigation based on preliminary evidence.
Chief Justice Upadhyay, while suggesting the need for a deeper probe, has directed that no new case assignments be given to Justice Varma until further notice.
In response to the allegations, Supreme Court Chief Justice Khanna has ordered a three-judge inquiry committee comprising justices from three different state High Courts: Chief Justice Shishi Nag of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chief Justice G.S. Sandhawalia of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, and Justice Anu Shivaraman of the Karnataka High Court. The committee will investigate the matter thoroughly.
