Sun Mar 23 08:02:02 UTC 2025: **Bengaluru’s First Rains Expose City’s Infrastructure Woes, Leading to Deaths and Widespread Disruption**

**Bengaluru, March 23, 2025** – The first rainfall of the year in Bengaluru on March 22nd, 2025, revealed significant shortcomings in the city’s infrastructure, resulting in widespread disruption, including the tragic death of a three-year-old girl. Heavy downpours, with Bengaluru City recording 11.8 mm and Bengaluru KIAL 38.6 mm of rainfall, overwhelmed the city’s drainage systems, causing severe waterlogging in numerous areas.

The deluge led to at least 25 fallen trees and 75 fallen branches across eight zones, according to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). Yelahanka zone, which experienced up to 50 mm of rainfall, was particularly hard hit. Major roads, including the airport road, experienced severe traffic congestion due to waterlogging, affecting travellers. Several subways were also inundated.

The inadequate drainage system prompted widespread criticism of the BBMP’s preparedness. Social media users expressed frustration over the city’s recurring problems with waterlogging, despite several months having passed since the last rain. Bengaluru Central MP, P. C. Mohan, echoed these concerns on X, stating, “Bengaluru’s first summer rain, and the city is already drowning—imagine the monsoon! Wake up, BBMP.”

The rainfall also triggered widespread power outages in areas like Hebbal, Basaveshwara Nagar, and HSR Layout, lasting between two and seven hours. The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) helpline (1912) was overwhelmed, receiving over 78,500 calls, with a significant number abandoned due to high call volume.

The IMD reported a significant drop in minimum temperature following the rainfall. The weather forecast predicts continued cloudy skies and light to moderate rain/thundershowers for March 23rd. The BBMP is currently working to clear drains and address the aftermath of the downpour.
