RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA – Muslims worldwide are observing the last ten nights of Ramadan in search of Laylat al-Qadr (Night of Power), considered one of the most significant nights in the Islamic calendar. While the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) indicated it falls on one of the odd-numbered nights within this period, its exact date remains unknown. According to Prophetic traditions, certain signs may indicate its occurrence.
The knowledge of Laylat al-Qadr’s precise timing was reportedly lifted from humanity after a dispute among companions of the Prophet. A narration from Anas ibn Malik relates that the Prophet intended to reveal the night but a disagreement between two Muslims prevented him, leading to the belief that the inability to know the exact night is a blessing encouraging greater devotion throughout the ten nights.
Islamic scholars differ on pinpointing Laylat al-Qadr, but a commonly accepted view suggests it is one of the five odd-numbered nights (21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th) of Ramadan. Several signs mentioned in Prophetic traditions are often cited as potential indicators of the night. The Dar al-Ifta (Islamic jurisprudence authority) has released guidance for Muslims on how to identify possible nights. The article emphasizes the importance of increased devotion throughout the last ten nights, regardless of knowing the specific night.
