**NEW DELHI** – Rajya Sabha member and author Sudha Murty has defended her husband, Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy’s, controversial suggestion that young people work 70-hour weeks. Speaking on NDTV’s ‘India Through the Eyes of Its Icons,’ Murty explained that during Infosys’ formative years, such long hours were necessary for the company’s success.
“My husband built Infosys with no money, only dedicated colleagues,” Murty stated. “It was only possible with 70-hour workweeks, sometimes even more. There was no magic; it was sheer hard work, coupled with luck and timing.”
Murty acknowledged the impact on personal life, but emphasized a philosophy of mutual support and prioritizing passion. While Narayana Murthy focused on building Infosys, she managed the household, raised their children, and pursued her own career, teaching computer science and writing. She later became deeply involved in the Infosys Foundation.
“I made a conscious decision to support my husband’s work,” Murty explained. “There was no point in complaining. He was doing something bigger. And now that I’m heavily involved with the Foundation, he supports me. That’s what I call life.” She added that many professions, including journalism and medicine, similarly demand extensive hours.
Murty concluded by emphasizing the importance of passion and a supportive partner. “God gives everyone 24 hours,” she said. “How you spend them is your choice. If you’re passionate about something, it requires time, and your partner should support that.” Her comments follow Narayana Murthy’s October 2023 podcast appearance, where he argued for increased work productivity in India.
