**BEIRUT/JERUSALEM –** A fragile truce between Israel and Lebanon teetered on the brink of collapse Saturday after Israeli artillery and airstrikes targeted southern Lebanon in response to rocket fire from across the border. The incident marks the first significant escalation since a U.S.-brokered ceasefire ended a year-long war between Israel and Hezbollah in November 2024.
According to the Israeli military, three rockets were launched from a Lebanese area approximately 6 kilometers north of the border. The Israeli army retaliated with artillery fire, while airstrikes hit several southern Lebanese towns. While no casualties were immediately reported, both sides signaled a willingness to further escalate the conflict. The Israeli military stated it would respond severely to future attacks and is investigating the perpetrators of Saturday’s rocket launch. Hezbollah, a Lebanese armed group allied with Iran, has yet to comment.
The November ceasefire, which followed a devastating war that claimed many lives and significant military assets on both sides, stipulated the removal of Hezbollah weaponry from southern Lebanon and the withdrawal of Israeli troops. However, both sides have accused each other of violating the agreement. Israel maintains that Hezbollah still possesses military infrastructure in the south, while Lebanon alleges that Israel continues to occupy Lebanese territory.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam warned of a renewed military escalation unless security measures are taken to demonstrate Lebanon’s control over matters of war and peace. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz placed the responsibility for the rocket fire squarely on the Lebanese government, vowing to protect Israeli communities and declaring that any attack would trigger a strong response. The situation remains highly volatile, raising serious concerns about a potential return to full-scale conflict.
