**Imphal, Manipur –** A five-member delegation of Supreme Court judges arrived in Imphal, Manipur on March 22, 2025, to assess the situation following the outbreak of violence in May 2023. Led by Justice B.R. Gavai, the delegation will visit relief camps housing internally displaced persons (IDPs) resulting from the conflict between Meitei and Kuki communities.
The visit comes nearly two years after the violence, which claimed hundreds of lives and displaced over 50,000 people. Justice Gavai, also the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), will virtually inaugurate legal and medical camps across Manipur, aiming to connect IDPs with government welfare programs. These programs include access to healthcare, pensions, employment schemes, and assistance with reconstructing lost identity documents. Essential relief materials will also be distributed.
A NALSA statement emphasized the continued need for legal and humanitarian aid to the affected communities. The delegation’s visit underscores the ongoing impact of the violence. Congress MP Jairam Ramesh, while welcoming the judges’ visit, earlier questioned the delay in imposing President’s rule in Manipur. The violence, which began after a rally by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM) on May 3, 2023, required the deployment of paramilitary forces to restore order.
