**NEW DELHI** – Muslims worldwide are preparing to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting. In India, the festival is expected to fall on either Sunday, March 30th, or Monday, March 31st, 2025, depending on the sighting of the new moon. The central government has declared March 31st a gazetted holiday.

Eid al-Fitr, meaning “festival of breaking the fast,” is a time of prayer, charity, and joyous celebration with family and friends. Traditional celebratory meals, including the sweet dish Seviyan, are prepared, and gifts are exchanged. Muslims also observe Zakat, the religious obligation to donate to the less fortunate.

The date of Eid varies globally due to differing moonsighting observations. In Saudi Arabia and the UAE, the celebrations are also anticipated around March 30th or 31st, with official holiday periods announced by respective governments. The UAE’s moon sighting committee will begin observations on March 29th, determining the exact holiday dates. Similar preparations are underway in other Muslim-majority nations.
