Fri Mar 21 07:37:24 UTC 2025: ## US Judge Blocks Deportation of Indian Researcher Accused of Hamas Ties

**Washington D.C.** – A US judge has intervened to prevent the deportation of Badar Khan Suri, an Indian postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown University, who was arrested and slated for expulsion over alleged ties to Hamas. Judge Patricia Tolliver Giles of the Eastern District of Virginia issued an order on Thursday prohibiting Suri’s removal from the United States pending further court action.

Suri’s arrest sparked concerns within the academic community about potential threats to freedom of research and speech. His lawyer argued the arrest was a retaliatory measure intended to silence his advocacy for Palestinian rights. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed an emergency motion supporting Suri, calling the detention unconstitutional. ACLU attorney Sophia Gregg stated that detaining someone based solely on political views is an attempt to silence dissent.

The Department of Homeland Security, however, claims Suri, a fellow at Georgetown’s Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, was actively spreading Hamas propaganda and promoting anti-Semitism on social media. A spokesperson stated that Suri’s presence in the US threatened US foreign policy and that he had close connections to a senior Hamas advisor. The State Department cited a provision of immigration law allowing for expulsion in such cases.

Georgetown University, while stating it is unaware of Suri engaging in illegal activity, affirmed its support for its community members’ right to free inquiry and debate. Suri’s lawyer contends the government’s actions are based on his family connections (his wife is a US citizen of Palestinian descent) and his constitutionally protected free speech. The university initially stated it had not received a reason for his detention. This incident follows the recent expulsion of a French scientist after his phone was searched and deemed to contain “hateful messages”. The case highlights ongoing tensions surrounding freedom of speech and academic research in the United States.
