Fri Mar 21 14:40:50 UTC 2025: ## US Cuts Off Canadian Access to Border-Straddling Library Amid Heightened Tensions

**Montreal, Canada** – The United States has unilaterally closed the main Canadian access point to the Haskell Free Library and Opera House, a historic building straddling the US-Canada border, sparking outrage and escalating tensions between the two nations.

The move, announced jointly Thursday by the Quebec town of Stanstead and the library, comes amid escalating rhetoric from US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly threatened to annex Canada. The library, built in 1905 as a symbol of cross-border cooperation, is now the subject of a significant diplomatic dispute.

Canadians previously accessed the library through its main entrance on the US side, requiring only identification, not passports. This access has now been severed, requiring significant infrastructural changes for the library to accommodate.

US Customs and Border Protection has yet to comment on the decision. However, the action has been condemned by US Senator Peter Welch of Vermont, who called it a “troubling escalation” in Trump’s rhetoric against Canada. He emphasized Vermont’s strong ties with its northern neighbor and the library’s significance as a symbol of shared cultural heritage.

The decision follows a January visit by US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, who reportedly declared “USA number 1” and referred to Canada as “the 51st state” while on the Canadian side of the library. This incident further inflamed tensions.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has previously rejected Trump’s annexation threats as “crazy,” while expressing willingness to discuss trade disputes only on the condition that Canada’s sovereignty is respected. The closure of the library’s Canadian access point is seen as a direct challenge to that sovereignty and a significant escalation in the ongoing dispute.
