**New Delhi, [Date]** – The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is implementing a new security measure to combat UPI fraud. Starting April 1, 2025, all inactive or reassigned mobile numbers linked to Unified Payments Interface (UPI) accounts will be delisted, effectively suspending payment services.
This move aims to prevent unauthorized access to financial transactions. Millions of users could be affected if they haven’t updated their mobile numbers registered with their banks. Those who have changed numbers, have inactive numbers, or have had their numbers reassigned to another person are at risk of losing UPI access.
Banks and payment service providers (PSPs) like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm will proactively identify and remove these inactive numbers. Affected users will receive notifications before their UPI services are suspended, providing an opportunity to update their information. Updating can be done through net banking, UPI apps, ATMs, or bank branches.
“Inactive mobile numbers create a significant security vulnerability,” explained an NPCI spokesperson. “This measure is crucial to protect users from potential fraud and financial loss.”
The NPCI urges all UPI users to verify their registered mobile numbers are active and receiving SMS alerts and OTPs. Failing to update the information before the deadline could result in temporary suspension of UPI services. To avoid disruption, users should check their mobile number’s status and update it with their respective banks before April 1, 2025.
