**COIMBATORE, March 21, 2025** – A recent terrestrial bird census in the Coimbatore Forest Division has revealed a vibrant avian population, exceeding previous years’ counts. The two-day survey, conducted on March 15th and 16th, recorded 9,033 birds representing 232 species. This is a significant increase from the 7,579 birds of 204 species recorded in 2023 and slightly lower than the 12,200 birds of 225 species recorded in 2024.
The survey, part of a statewide initiative by the Forest Department, involved 126 participants across 25 teams. Survey locations included 17 sites across seven forest ranges, as well as four urban and four rural locations within Coimbatore. Koothamandi and Kanthavayal reported the highest bird counts (763), while Koothamandi and Gandhavayal recorded the highest number of species (141).
The census also included a first-ever night birding session, resulting in the identification of ten nocturnal bird species. A total of 207 land birds and 25 water birds were recorded. Importantly, 555 migrant birds representing 41 species were also counted. Notable species observed included the Red Spurfowl, Oriental Turtle-Dove, and several species of pigeons and owls.
A previous wetland bird survey (March 8th and 9th) in the same division recorded 13,792 birds of 182 species. The Coimbatore Nature Society, The Nature and Butterfly Society, and WWF-India collaborated with the Forest Department on both surveys. The results highlight the rich biodiversity of the Coimbatore Forest Division and the success of conservation efforts.
