**Cape Town, South Africa** – A member of a South African research team at the SANAE IV base in Antarctica has been placed under psychological evaluation following allegations of assault and sexual harassment. The incident, first reported by the Sunday Times, allegedly involved a physical attack on the base leader, Mbulaheni Kelcey Maewashe, and death threats against other team members.
A distress email sent by a crew member to South African authorities detailed a “real-life horror movie” unfolding at the remote base, describing escalating violent behavior from a colleague. The dispute reportedly stemmed from a schedule change related to a weather-dependent task.
The South African Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries confirmed receiving a distress message on February 27th and immediately initiated a response plan. While officials haven’t released the names of those involved, they confirmed that the alleged perpetrator is cooperating with psychological evaluations, has shown remorse, and issued a formal apology.
The nine-person team, deployed since February 1st, is currently undergoing remote psychological counselling. Authorities have stated that despite the serious allegations, the team will not be evacuated. All members underwent psychological evaluations prior to deployment to prepare them for the extreme isolation and harsh conditions.
The SANAE IV base, located deep within Antarctica, conducts crucial climate monitoring, atmospheric studies, and geological surveys. The incident highlights the unique challenges faced by researchers working in such isolated and demanding environments. While the investigation continues, authorities emphasize their commitment to both addressing the situation and ensuring the safety of the remaining team members. The team is expected to remain at the base for 13 months, with their next supply ship arriving in December.
