**Madurai, India – March 21, 2025** – The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has issued a temporary injunction halting the publication of the 2025 National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings. The decision follows a public interest litigation (PIL) petition alleging that the rankings are based on unverified and potentially manipulated data submitted by educational institutions.
The petitioner, C. Chellamuthu, argued that the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), responsible for compiling the NIRF rankings, relies solely on self-reported data from institutions without independent verification or auditing. He contrasted this with the more rigorous process employed by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), which conducts on-site audits. Chellamuthu claimed that the lack of verification allows institutions to manipulate data, potentially misleading students and negatively impacting the quality of education in India. He further pointed to criticism of the NIRF methodology from reputed academicians.
The court, comprising Justices J. Nisha Banu and S. Srimathy, agreed to hear the petition and granted an interim stay on the publication of the rankings. The Ministry of Education and the NBA have been directed to file a counter-affidavit by April 24th. The court will then reconsider the matter. The interim order effectively prevents the release of the 2025 NIRF rankings until further notice.
