Fri Mar 21 07:15:20 UTC 2025: ## Shin Bet Chief Ronen Bar Sacked Amidst Political Tensions

**Jerusalem** – Israel’s cabinet has approved the dismissal of Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) chief Ronen Bar, effective April 10th or upon the appointment of his successor. The decision, driven by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s stated “lack of trust,” has sparked widespread condemnation and renewed protests.

Bar, who has headed the agency since 2021, refused to attend the cabinet meeting, accusing the government of acting on “improper considerations” and “personal and institutional conflicts of interest.” In a letter, he alleged his dismissal aimed to obstruct investigations into the events leading up to the October 7th Hamas attacks. A recent Shin Bet report criticized both the agency’s failures and Netanyahu’s role in creating conditions favorable to the attack.

Netanyahu and Bar have been embroiled in a bitter dispute for months, fueled by a bribery investigation targeting the Prime Minister and disagreements over the intelligence failures preceding the Hamas attacks. The Prime Minister’s move has been met with fierce opposition from political rivals and intensified anti-government protests, with police resorting to water cannons and making arrests to quell demonstrations in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem this week. The dismissal further deepens political divisions within Israel.
