**Mangaluru, March 21, 2025** – The Surathkal police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the A. Shama Rao Foundation, which operates Srinivas College in Mukka, for allegedly encroaching on the Nandini riverbed. The FIR, filed under Section 192A of the Karnataka Land Revenue Act, names Srinivas Rao and other foundation partners as accused.
The complaint, lodged by Surathkal Revenue Inspector N.G. Prasad, stems from an inspection that revealed the college had allegedly encroached upon 23 cents of poramboke (community) land. A software analysis indicated soil filling on the encroached land, which was subsequently removed by the college management. Despite the removal, the FIR was registered due to the nature of the encroachment – a riverbed, which is considered government land.
The issue came to light following concerns raised by Moodbidri MLA Umanath Kotian regarding pollution of the Nandini river due to sewage discharge from various establishments, including a medical college. Kotian highlighted the impact on the Khandevu fish hunting festival, which had been disrupted by the pollution. Following his intervention at a District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (Disha) meeting, Deputy Commissioner M. P. Mullai Muhilan directed relevant agencies to take action.
