**Beijing, China** – Sima Nan, a prominent Chinese social media influencer known for his anti-American stance and nationalist rhetoric, has been fined 9.27 million yuan ($1.3 million USD) for tax evasion. The Beijing Municipal Taxation Bureau announced that an investigation revealed Sima Nan underpaid taxes between 2019 and 2023 through methods including concealing income and false declarations. The investigation uncovered a total of 4.62 million yuan in unpaid personal income tax and value-added tax. Furthermore, a film production company he controls was found to have illegally benefited from small and micro-enterprise tax incentives, resulting in an additional 753,200 yuan in unpaid corporate income tax.

The bureau levied a total of 9.27 million yuan in back taxes, late fees, and penalties, all of which have been collected. A spokesperson stated that tax authorities will continue to strengthen tax supervision and severely punish illegal tax activities to maintain a fair and just tax order.

The 69-year-old Sima Nan boasts a massive online following, with nearly 38 million followers on Douyin (China’s TikTok) and over 3.22 million on Weibo. He rose to fame in the 1990s for exposing fraudulent qigong masters and quacks, later transitioning to political commentary. While cultivating a large audience by positioning himself as a patriot and anti-American figure, Sima Nan faced public backlash after it was revealed he had purchased property in the United States years ago, prompting a public apology. He has also been a vocal critic of private enterprise, notably accusing Lenovo Group of selling off state assets. Sima Nan was also briefly silenced on social media platforms in 2022, and reportedly faced a year-long ban last November.
