**Beijing, China** – Prominent Chinese internet personality and commentator Sima Nan has been fined over 9 million RMB (approximately US$1.3 million) for tax evasion, according to the Beijing Municipal Taxation Bureau. The bureau’s investigation, leveraging big data analysis, revealed that Sima Nan underpaid taxes totaling 4.62 million RMB between 2019 and 2023 through methods such as concealing income and making false declarations. His company, Beijing Media Chinese Film and Television Planning Center, was also found to have underpaid corporate income tax by 753,200 RMB through practices like inflating expenses and illegally claiming small and micro-enterprise tax benefits.

The total penalty, including back taxes, late payment fees, and fines, amounts to 9.27 million RMB, which has been fully recovered. The bureau stated that these actions are in line with relevant laws and regulations, including the PRC Individual Income Tax Law, Enterprise Income Tax Law, Tax Collection and Administration Law, and Administrative Penalty Law.

Sima Nan, known for his outspoken commentary and boasting over 50 million followers across various platforms, has not updated his social media accounts since early November 2022. Ironically, his past videos included commentary on tax evasion by other high-profile individuals. In 2021, he criticized the tax avoidance practices of well-known personalities and even discussed American tax laws, specifically highlighting the perceived discrepancies in how the wealthy pay taxes.

The Beijing Municipal Taxation Bureau emphasized its commitment to strengthening tax supervision and cracking down on tax-related illegal activities to ensure a fair and just tax environment.
