**Kannur, Kerala – March 20, 2025** – P. Appukuttan, a renowned orator, dramatist, and former secretary of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi, passed away on Wednesday night at the age of 85. Appukuttan, a prominent figure in the Purogamana Kala Sahitya Sangham (Progressive Arts and Literature Association), made significant contributions as a playwright, critic, and teacher.
His career spanned several decades, beginning as a teacher in 1959. He later served as the Akademi’s secretary from 1996 to 2001, playing a key role in promoting grassroots cultural activities. Appukuttan’s contributions extended to the stage adaptation of K. P. Kunhirama Podhuval’s play *Bharatha Ratham*.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed his condolences, highlighting Appukuttan’s unique analytical skills and organizational abilities in leading the progressive arts and literature movement. The Chief Minister also praised his efforts in expanding the movement’s reach and strengthening cultural activities.
Appukuttan’s mortal remains will be kept for public viewing at Annur Village Hall on Friday, March 21, before cremation at Murikoval Shantisthala. He is survived by his wife, C.P. Vatsala, and three children.
