**Patna, Bihar, March 20, 2025** – Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar sparked a controversy on Thursday after demanding a ban on mobile phones in the state assembly. His outburst, reportedly triggered by an MLA using a phone to ask a supplementary question, led to accusations of being technologically backward and out of touch.
Kumar argued that excessive mobile phone use threatens the planet, claiming it will lead to the earth’s demise within 10 years. He directed Assembly Speaker Nand Kishore Yadav to enforce the ban, citing a previous prohibition on mobile devices in the House.
However, Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav criticized Kumar’s stance on social media, highlighting the assembly’s online question-and-answer system designed to reduce paper usage. Yadav, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), argued that the system necessitates the use of mobile devices for supplementary questions. He labeled Kumar a “conservative and outdated Chief Minister who is anti-technology as well as anti-youth, students and women.”
Further fueling the debate, RJD MLA Bhai Birendra expressed concerns about Kumar’s mental health, suggesting he requires medical attention. The incident has escalated into a political clash, with the opposition accusing the Chief Minister of being resistant to technological advancements.
