**Nagpur, Maharashtra, March 20, 2025** – Eighteen special police teams are hunting down over 1,200 suspects implicated in Monday’s violent riots in Nagpur, Maharashtra. The unrest, triggered by rumors of a religious artifact being burned, resulted in widespread damage and injuries.
Authorities have already arrested 69 individuals in connection with the violence. Five First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed, naming 200 suspects. Police are utilizing CCTV footage to identify an additional 1,000 individuals involved.
The violence, which left 33 police officers injured, including three deputy commissioners, involved mobs damaging property, throwing petrol bombs and stones, and attacking homes. One FIR alleges that rioters assaulted a female police constable, attempting to remove her clothing.
Curfew remains in place for a third day in several areas of the city. The investigation is ongoing, with the special teams working closely with the cyber cell to identify and apprehend the remaining suspects. The police commissioner stated that the teams are comprised of personnel from multiple police stations and the crime branch.
