Thu Mar 20 02:23:18 UTC 2025: **Indian Railways Reserves Lower Berths for Vulnerable Passengers**

HYDERABAD, INDIA – March 20, 2025 – The Indian Railways has announced a new initiative to reserve lower berths for senior citizens, women over 45, persons with disabilities, and pregnant women. This initiative, confirmed by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, allocates a quota of lower berths in all classes (Sleeper, AC 3 Tier, and AC 2 Tier) based on coach capacity. The quota ensures that these passengers automatically receive lower berths upon booking, subject to availability. Even if initially assigned a middle or upper berth, these passengers will be prioritized for lower berth vacancies during the journey. A separate quota for passengers with disabilities is also applicable in all mail/express trains, including Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains.

In other railway news, the Tungabhadra Express (Train No. 17023/17024) will change its terminal from Secunderabad to Kacheguda starting April 10th. Additionally, 26 weekly special trains will operate between Charlapalli and Kanniyakumari from April 4th to June. Separately, South Central Railway (SCR) officials received cyber security training focusing on protecting against digital threats.
