Wed Mar 19 20:52:22 UTC 2025: ## Judge Orders Transfer of Transgender Women Back to Women’s Prisons
**NEW YORK, March 20, 2025** – A federal judge has ordered the Bureau of Prisons to return two transgender women inmates to women’s facilities after they were transferred to men’s prisons following President Trump’s executive order restricting transgender protections. U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth issued a preliminary injunction, citing concerns about the women’s safety and alleging they faced sexual assault and other violence in the men’s prisons.
The judge’s decision comes as part of ongoing litigation challenging the executive order. Judge Lamberth previously blocked the transfer of a dozen other transgender women and this ruling expands protections to at least fifteen transgender inmates. A separate lawsuit challenging the order’s ban on gender-affirming care is currently pending.
The Bureau of Prisons spokesperson declined to comment on the ruling. The executive order mandates housing transgender women in men’s prisons and halts gender-affirming medical care. This latest injunction represents another setback for the agency’s attempts to comply with the controversial order. A federal judge in Boston has also issued a similar ruling.
