**Bengaluru, March 20, 2025** – Facing criticism over a recent fare hike, the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) is exploring alternative revenue streams, including the introduction of cargo transport services during off-peak hours. Inspired by Delhi Metro’s successful partnership with Blue Dart, BMRCL plans to collaborate with logistics and e-commerce companies to assess the feasibility of using metro trains for freight movement. A key hub for this initiative is slated to be Baiyappanahalli station.
The plan aims to improve supply chain efficiency while mitigating urban congestion and pollution. The BMRCL envisions integrating first and last-mile connectivity with metro-based logistics solutions and Micro Parcel Hubs to optimize freight movement within the city. This model, similar to that used in Madrid, would dedicate a portion of the train for cargo, mirroring the Delhi Metro’s approach where a designated coach handles packages while passenger services remain unaffected.
Beyond cargo transport, BMRCL is also pursuing other revenue-generating strategies. These include inviting tenders for semi-naming and co-branding rights at select stations, advertising within stations, and train-wrapping advertisements.
Transport expert Prof. M.N. Srihari welcomed the initiative, highlighting the global trend of metro systems utilizing spare capacity for additional revenue and promoting sustainable solutions. However, he criticized the timing of the cargo initiative, suggesting it should have been implemented before the fare increase. He pointed to successful examples in other cities like Madrid, urging BMRCL to leverage these learnings. The new revenue models, he argued, are crucial for BMRCL’s financial stability amid growing urbanization and e-commerce reliance.
