**GUWAHATI, March 20, 2025** – A new memorial honoring the bravery of Adi warriors who resisted British colonial forces in 1894 was inaugurated in Arunachal Pradesh’s Upper Siang district on Wednesday. The Mirem Batum Lingkang War Memorial, located in Adi Pasi, commemorates the Adi people’s successful defense against a British punitive expedition during the Third Anglo-Abor War.
Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein officiated the ceremony, praising the Adi warriors’ guerrilla tactics and strategic use of stone barricades to repel the colonial army. He lauded the community’s initiative in funding the memorial’s construction, highlighting it as an example of collective effort and resilience.
Mein emphasized the importance of preserving Arunachal Pradesh’s cultural heritage and natural resources, advocating for sustainable development that balances economic growth with environmental protection. He called for the preservation of traditional knowledge, languages, and customs, stressing their significance in defining the state’s identity.
The Deputy Chief Minister also addressed the planned Upper Siang Multipurpose Project and the potential environmental impact of a large dam being constructed by China upstream on the Yarlung Tsangpo River (the same river known as the Brahmaputra in India). He urged the community to engage in constructive dialogue with the government regarding the project’s potential benefits and challenges. The memorial serves as a potent symbol of the state’s history and its ongoing commitment to preserving its heritage.
