**New Delhi, March 20, 2025** – Delhi is hosting the sixth edition of the Habitat International Film Festival (HIFF) and a major art exhibition, showcasing a significant cultural exchange between India and Italy. The festival, spotlighting Italian cinema, features a retrospective of classics restored in Bologna, including Satyajit Ray’s Apu Trilogy and Vittorio De Sica’s *Bicycle Thieves*, alongside contemporary films. This coincides with the centenary of Italian actor Marcello Mastroianni, who is being honored at the festival.
A key highlight is the exhibition of Caravaggio’s iconic painting, *Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy*, valued at €50 million. Currently in Beijing, the artwork will be displayed at the Italian Embassy Cultural Centre and the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art before returning to Rome. Andrea Anastasio, director of the Italian Embassy Cultural Centre, emphasizes the painting’s importance in a time of AI-generated realities, highlighting the unique human expression in Caravaggio’s work. He sees the exhibition as a crucial step in bridging cultural gaps and fostering a global perspective, suggesting a future collaborative exhibit pairing Indian and Italian art.
The HIFF, featuring 70 films from 15 countries, underscores the diversity of cinematic voices, contrasting the influence of Hollywood with the need to preserve auteur filmmaking. Anastasio voiced concerns about the homogenization of cinematic tastes and the potential threat to diverse narratives. He lauded films like *The Great Ambition* and *Parikrama* for challenging simplistic notions of wealth and happiness. The festival runs from March 21st to 30th at the India Habitat Centre, with free entry.
