CAPE CANAVERAL, FL – Astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore are scheduled to return to Earth early Wednesday morning, concluding a mission extended to over nine months. The pair undocked from the International Space Station (ISS) at 10:35 am IST Tuesday aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft, beginning a 17-hour journey back to Earth. Splashdown is expected around 3:27 am IST Wednesday off the coast of Florida.
Originally scheduled for a short test flight of Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, Williams and Wilmore’s mission was unexpectedly extended after the Starliner experienced propulsion issues, rendering it unable to return them to Earth. The astronauts launched to the ISS last June. Their extended stay has raised concerns about the potential effects of prolonged space travel on the human body.
