**New Delhi, March 19, 2025** – Delhi police are investigating the death of a sanitation worker and injuries to two others after they fell unconscious while cleaning a sewer in New Friends Colony. Panth Lal Chandra (43) died in hospital, while Ramkishan Chandra (35) remains in critical condition and Shiv Das (25) is recovering.
The incident occurred Sunday evening when the three men entered a manhole belonging to the Delhi Jal Board (DJB). The DJB claims the men were not their employees and that no authorized sewer cleaning was taking place. However, police suspect the men would not have entered the manhole without permission and are investigating whether private or government entities were involved.
The police noted the workers lacked protective gear and equipment. A case has been registered under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and relevant sections of the Manual Scavengers and Their Rehabilitation Act, 2013, which prohibits manual scavenging. The investigation is ongoing.
