**Punta Cana, Dominican Republic** – Newly released surveillance footage is offering a clearer picture of the events leading up to the disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki, an Indian-American student missing since March 6th from a Dominican Republic beach. The footage, obtained by local news outlet Noticia SIN, shows Ms. Konanki, a pre-med student from Virginia, at an outdoor bar with friends the night before her disappearance. The video also depicts Joshua Riibe, a person of interest in the case, appearing intoxicated outside the same bar.
The video shows Ms. Konanki briefly leaving her friends, appearing to briefly hunch over before rejoining them and embracing a female companion. Both Ms. Konanki and Mr. Riibe are seen wearing the same clothes as in previously released footage. However, the new video shows the pair in separate groups and not interacting directly. A second video shows Ms. Konanki in the RIU Hotel & Resort lobby with three other young women, still wearing the same outfit.
Ms. Konanki, who was vacationing with friends, was last seen with Mr. Riibe, a college student she met that night, at approximately 4:15 AM on March 6th after leaving a resort nightclub. Earlier surveillance footage shows the pair walking arm-in-arm along a resort pathway. Most of Konanki’s friends left the beach by 5:50 AM, leaving her alone with Riibe.
Mr. Riibe, who has been questioned extensively by Dominican authorities and had his passport confiscated, remains in custody. He has told investigators that a strong wave separated them while in the water, and that after struggling to reach shore, he found himself alone. He claims he lost consciousness on a beach chair after vomiting seawater. Dominican authorities are continuing their search for Ms. Konanki, but while they believe drowning may have been the cause, Ms. Konanki’s family suspects foul play. No charges have been filed against Mr. Riibe at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
