**COIMBATORE, March 17, 2025** – The Coimbatore police exhumed the body of a female infant on Monday following an investigation into an illegal adoption case. The baby, born to an unmarried couple from the Nilgiris on February 5th, died a day after being rescued by the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) on March 10th.
The infant was allegedly illegally adopted by a couple from Thirupattur on February 18th with the assistance of two CMCH security guards. A health worker alerted Childline, leading to the DCPU’s intervention and the baby’s placement in a Kinathukadavu children’s home.
However, the child developed illness and died on March 11th at CMCH after being transferred from the Pollachi Government Headquarters Hospital. The children’s home representative stated that the baby was handed over without medical records, raising concerns about the post-rescue care. The body was subsequently buried without police notification.
Police only learned of the illegal adoption and the infant’s death on March 13th and 14th respectively, after receiving a complaint. Six individuals, including the baby’s biological parents, the adoptive couple, and the two security guards, have been arrested. A forensic post-mortem examination was conducted following the exhumation. The police investigation is ongoing.
